LIFRC is collaborating with the Lopez Island School District and Lopez Library to offer an after-school learning enrichment program. San Juan County has allocated ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funding for childcare, which we will use to hire staff. The school will provide an in-kind match of school facilities, as well as staff time to track attendance and be sure children go the correct place after school. The library will be a vital partner offering reading and literacy activities.
The plan is to offer a learning enrichment program five days a week until 5:30 p.m., including on Tuesday early-release days. LIFRC is currently advertising for staff; program personnel will be supplemented by community members recruited to offer additional activities (bring a talent you want to share!), and high school students to serve as leaders/mentors.
Funding for the program will extend through the 2021-22 school year. Our hope is that our joint efforts will make us successful with future grants to sustain an ongoing after-school program.
